MasterChef, Culture & More: 2025 Indian Independence Fest In NZ

India’s 79th Independence Day is being celebrated on a grander scale this year across New Zealand — and we at the Northland Indian Association (NIAI) are proud to be a part of it. The multi-day celebration, organised by the Indian High Commission in Wellington and the Consulate General of India in Auckland, is supported by leading community groups including the New Zealand Indian Central Association, Waikato Indian Association, and NIAI.

A Festival of Culture, Cuisine, and Commerce Taking place from 15 to 18 August under the theme “The World and Us”, the celebrations span Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton, and Whangārei — showcasing the cultural richness, growing economic ties, and people-to-people connection between India and New Zealand. We are excited to mark this important occasion with a dynamic programme that reflects India’s cultural richness, economic partnerships, and growing people-to-people connect,” said the organisers.

Flag Hoisting Ceremonies – 15 August

The official Independence Day ceremonies will commence on 15 August with flag hoisting events and cultural performances at the following locations:

  • Wellington: Indian High Commission premises
  • Auckland: Mahatma Gandhi Centre, Mt. Eden

The day will conclude with a community reception in the evening.

Indian Culinary Celebrations

  • 15 August (North Shore): Food Festival featuring top chefs from India
  • 16 August: MasterChef-style challenge where Indian and Kiwi chefs compete in a fusion cook-off using mystery ingredients

Whangārei Finale – 18 August

The grand conclusion of the Independence Day celebrations will take place in Whangārei on 18 August, featuring a business networking event and a culinary showcase hosted in partnership with the Whangārei District Council.

The event will spotlight “food diplomacy”, with specially curated Indian dishes prepared by visiting chefs, offering local leaders a taste of India’s rich culinary heritage.
